The story
A photo of village people escaping a sudden downfall of rain in the remote and rural Kiranga Village, in Uganda.

What the jury said
"This photo had a strong impact on all of us; we wanted to find out the story behind the photo. It seems like such a sad moment in these people’s lives. It turns out they are escaping from a storm, but this photo also makes you wonder about how much of an impact the storm has had on their lives. It’s not just the moment that this photo captures that makes it so special, it’s also the photography itself. The way the light falls on each of their faces and the perfect composition are what gives it the winning touch. The way the shadows fall gives it an intense feeling. It fits very well into the People theme and leaves you thinking about the lives of others."
Eddy Posthuma de Boer, a highly respected professional photographer, made the following remarks: “A good story and fine composition complement each other, to make this image a real winner. It is an excellent photo which I would have been proud to take myself. Compliments from the profession!”
